近現代の戦史、戦争にまつわる様々な資料・兵器・遺品が展示されている宝物館。1階には靖国神社に合祀された英霊の写真や家族とやり取りしていた手紙などが展示されている。各展示の解説は英語も併記されている。そのためか海外からの観光客の来館も多い。
一部で当時の日本国軍を礼賛する展示や表示もあるが、あくまで当時の空気感を表現しているもので、ほとんどの解説の内容はこれまで研究されてきた近現代の戦史の事実をそのまま伝えている。展示数や展示部屋が多く、全てを鑑賞する目安の時間は2時間と言われているが、それ以上の時間を要する可能性もある。説明の内容は分かりやすい文章で書かれているものの高度で、日本が関わった戦争は複雑に絡み合う世界の戦争史にも当然関わってくるため非常に多岐にわたる。小学生以下であればかなり退屈に感じるかもしれない。当時の情勢や戦争に至るまで、また停戦・終戦に至るまでのプロセス、そこから現在に至るまでを学ぶ（あるいは学び直す）上で重要な施設であることは間違いない。
日本人としての誇りを取り戻す、あるいは戦争に傾倒する展示を忌み嫌う、色々想いあるだろう。そうした議論も往年の資料や品々を見ることで語り合うことが出来る。未来を形作るために過去があるが、決して封印できないし封印してはいけない。良し悪し関係なく、より良い未来を形作るために必要な過去が、ここには詰まっているように思う。

It is a museum that is exhibited modern war history, various materials, weapons, and artifacts related to war. The first floor are exhibited the photos of the spirits of war who have been enshrined in Yasukuni Shrine and those letters of their families. The commentary of each exhibit is written not only in Japanese but also in English. There are many tourists from abroad.
Although there are some exhibits that commend the militarism of those days, it only expresses the atmosphere of that time. Most of the materials exhibit the facts of the modern and contemporary wars that have been studied so far. The number of exhibits and the number of exhibition rooms are very large, and you may not be able to see everything in two hours. The text of the commentary is highly advanced, and the war in Japan is involved in the complicated situation of the world. Therefore, children below elementary school students may find it very difficult. This museum is very important for learning (or relearning) the world situation leading up to the war, and the process from the beginning to the end of the war.
Even Japanese people have a complex feeling at this museum. Some think that they should regain their former pride, and some hate the war-focused exhibits. All I can say is that the facts that have happened can not and should not be sealed, and with these past beings, we can argue for creating a better future. Good or bad for these exhibits doesn't matter. I think that these exist as a past to create a better future.
