主に明治以降の戦没者を英霊として祀る神社、と言われると特別で複雑な印象を持つ神社と思われるが、建物そのものとしては他の神社と何ら遜色は無い。桜の季節、年始、終戦記念日を除き、普段はそれほど参拝客も多くなく、思い思いに1日を過ごす観光客の姿も多くある。靖国神社を訪れる人は日本人だけとは限らず、海外からの観光客も多くみられる。
殊更軍事的な要素を全目的に押すわけでもなく、ましてや軍国主義を礼賛する要素は全く見当たらない。参拝客に何かを強要することは無く、他の神社と同じく静かに穏やかに鎮座するのみだ。ここを訪れるたびに『英霊を祀る』ということが独り歩きし、人々の中で誇大解釈されていることに気づかされる。それでも国の未来を想い戦場に散っていった多くの人がいることは事実。
固定概念に囚われず、ただ静かに参拝し、穏やかな空気を感じながら境内を散策することを勧めたい。

But the building itself is the same as any other shrine. There are not many visitors, except for the cherry blossom season, the New Year's visit, and the anniversary of the end of the war. Not only Japanese people, but also many tourists from abroad visit there.
There are no military elements in this shrine, nor any elements to praise militarism. Naturally, there is nothing to force the visitors to do anything. Like other shrines, it is enshrined to quietly and calmly every day. Every time I visit here, I think that "the spirits of the war have being enshrined" is being over-interpreted. I think that there are many people who died on the battlefield thinking about the future of the country, even if they are different countries and people.
I would recommend you to worship quietly and walk the precincts while feeling the calm air, without being bound by the fixed concept.
