普段滅多に見ることのない公文書を、申請手続きを経れば誰でも閲覧・複写が可能な、非常に貴重な資料館と言えます。憲法や法律、叙勲、各種国家規模の事業の契約に至るまでの公文書が収められており、日本の歴史の遷移を公文書から辿るという貴重な体験が出来ます。勿論外交関係の公文書も多数あるため、日本語だけでなく諸外国言語の公文書もあります。ただ、やはり現代の文体に照らし合わせて見ると、明治から昭和初期の公文書の文体は、やや読みにくい。読める読めないにかかわらず、往年の雰囲気を味わう目的でもいいのかもしれません。
1階の展示室では、テーマに即した展示会が催されていることもあります。入場は無料で誰でも閲覧でき、公文書だけでなくテーマに即した他の展示品を見ることも出来ます。規模は小さく他の美術館や博物館に比べると地味な印象ですが、『公文書』という側面の展示は、他の博物館にはない違った印象を受けるかもしれません。
It is a archive museum that anyone can view and copy various official documents that are rarely seen at all by applying for them. They include constitutional law, decorations, and national contracts. You may be able to learn the history of Japan (especially Meiji Period) from those official documents. There are many foreign diplomatic documents by various foreign languages other than Japanese. Because they are written in the style unique to the official documents, you'll feel that they are somewhat difficult to read. But you'll feel the atmosphere of the people of the past year.
In the exhibition space on the first floor, exhibitions meeting the theme may be held. Admission fee for the exhibition is free, and various exhibits meeting the theme as well as official documents may be exhibited. Compared with other museums, exhibits and display methods are modest. But you may get a different impression from other museums.
